About the art contest

Students in grades 6–12 who live or attend school in Hennepin County were invited to submit pieces inspired by the theme Belonging Begins Here. The theme reflects the County’s commitment to creating a welcoming, inclusive community for everyone.

From the many submissions received, 35 finalists were chosen to have their work displayed.  The artwork represents a wide range of styles and ideas, showing how young people understand belonging and community.

This contest was cohosted and sponsored by the Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia). The artwork was previously displayed at Mia.
