Statement on mass shooting in Minneapolis

Hennepin County is heartbroken in the wake of yesterday’s mass shooting in Minneapolis. Violence has no place in our communities and leaves lasting harm. To the families who lost someone, to those recovering, and to every resident affected: We at Hennepin County grieve with you.

We also extend our profound gratitude to the first responders, including the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, Hennepin County workers who support emergency response, mental health supports, and victim services, as well as the City of Minneapolis and the Minneapolis Police Department. To the paramedics, nurses, surgeons, and staff at Hennepin Healthcare who received seven patients within minutes: we are eternally grateful. You make us proud to run a public hospital.

Counties are the caregivers of government, and Hennepin County pursues our mission to eliminate disparities by protecting and promoting the health of our residents. Through that lens, we remain dedicated to supporting victims, witnesses, and residents in this time — from crisis counselors for survivors and responders, to victim advocates and the Medical Examiner’s Office. And for the long-term work that healing from trauma requires, Hennepin County will be there for you.

Domestic violence is a public health crisis, and it is one of the most predictable forms of gun violence in our society. Our systems must be built to act on warning signs and protect people before they become victims.

Families of victims, survivors, and bystanders should have trust in systems — whether or not they have taken formal steps within those systems. Hennepin County will continue work to earn your trust by continuing to respond quickly and compassionately in a crisis, and to invest steadily in the systems that prevent tragedy and protect people.
